Kumaon

Humanity has been sensed in Kumaon for a very long time. Testimony of Stone Age settlements have been found in Kumaon, particularly at Lakhu Rudyard, the rock shelter. The paintings here time back to the Mesolithic period. Kumaon, like neighbouring Garhwal, lies right on the main axis of the Great Himalaya range. From the eastern ramparts of Nanda Devi, 25,645 feet, on through Nanda Kot and the Panchchuli group, finally meeting up with the Nepalese Api group along the gorge of the Mahakali, the Great Himalaya rises in a gentle sweep from the plains of Uttar Pradesh. Kumaon, the land of the Mahakali has the Goriganga, the Dhauliganga and the Ramganga as its major right bank tributaries. The history of the Katyuri dynasty is the early medieval history of Kumaon. The Katyuri kings ruled from the seventh to the 11th century, holding bend at the peak of their powers over large areas of Kumaon, Garhwal, and western Nepal.
