Haridwar, Garhwal
|
GarhwalThe Garhwal Himalayas have taken care for civilization from the teensy hours of history. For the voluminous legends of the Puranic period, it appears to have been a desired locale. Uttarakhand was the traditional name of Garhwal and excavations have revealed that it formed part of the Mauryan Empire. It has also been stated in the 7th-century travelogue of Huen Tsang. However, the name of the great 8th-century spiritual reformer Adi Shankaracharya, is inseparable from the name of Garhwal as he has visited the inaccessible, snow-laden heights of Garhwal, Joshimath and also some of the most sacred shrines, including Badrinath and Kedarnath.
