Height: 4267 Location: Dharamsala Kangra Valley Himachal Pradesh Best Climbing Season: Mid May to October Grade: Very Tough Accessibility: Open synopsis: This range has a length of 50 miles and its southern east extremity joins the Bara Bhangal Range. Pir Panjal range in Kashmir is practically a continuation of Dhaula Dhar Range. Matterhorn is the highest peak of this range.
This range bounds the valley of the north and can be termed as outer Himalayas. This great wall of granite does not have foothills. Rise is abrupt.
There are many passes on the crest of the range which connects Beas valley in south and Ravi valley in north. Some of them are Toral pass, Thamser and Jalsu Jot.
Major H.D. Minchiton attempted Dhaula Dhar ranges many times. He climbed Mon (another peak of Dhaula Dhar Ranges) in December 1904 but climb to Matterhorn became possible in on 6 June 1913. |
