August, September Grade: Technical Accessibility: Open synopsis: Lying in the Gangotri region is one of the world’s most beautiful mountain which is also the abode of Lord Shiva. The source of river Ganges is a few miles away from the base of the peak at the snout of Gangotri glacier.Peaks surrounding the Shivling are Kedarnath Dome, Bhagirathi, Meru and Thalay Sagar. It’s shape is often compared to that of Matterhorn. This peak was unclimbed till 1974. It was first climbed by an I.T.B.P team from it’s west face and within a gap of few weeks it was again climbed by an Indian team. From the east it was ascended by a British team in 1981 and from the west it was climbed by Chris Bonington and Jim Fotheringham in 1983. Sine then it has been ascended by quite a few. From the east an expedition was carried out John Bouchard in 1996 and a Dutch expedition was carried out in 1999.
