Height: 5602 Location: Ladakh range, India Glacier: Peaks:Karakoram Range synopsis: Khardung La is the world’s highest motorable mountain pass. It is mentioned in the Guiness Book of Records as the “ Highest Motorable Road”. This pass is located on the Karakoram range in South Pallu, 40 km north of Leh and is the gateway to the Nubra valley where the Siachen Glacier lies. This pass was built in 1976 and was opened for motor vehicles only in 1988. This pass has been a host to a number of motorbike,automobile and mountain biking expeditions. This pass is of strategic importance to India as it is used to carry essential supplies to Siachen Glacier. Historically it was also used as a caravan route to Central Asia. This pass descends to Khalsar in the north. |
