Gangtok means hilltop. The town is situated on a long ridge which borders the Ranipul river. Gangtok is a picturesque place with an excellent view of Kangchendzonga Range. Gangtok is an interesting town to spend time in with market streets and quaint lanes. Gangtok is known for it’s neat surroundings and temperate climate. It is considered to be the heart of Sikkim’s tourist industry. It used to be a small hamlet until the construction of Enchey monastery turned it into a pilgrimage center. It was a major stopover between British India and Tibet at the end of the 19th century. It became a part of India in 1947.
