Situated about 10 km away from river Indus in a side valley is the town of Leh. It is one of the most important town of Ladakh. In the ancient time it used to be trading point for caravans which came from Yarkand, Kashgar and Tibet. Because of it’s strategic importance Leh has a large military presence. Since it is situated at around 3,500 m above sea level it takes time for the people visiting it to get acclimatized due to rarified gases. This place attracts a number of tourists during the Hemis festival.
