In the northern state of Uttaranchal, the district of Pithoragarh lies in a stunning valley, in the lap of inner Himalayas. It is situated at an altitude of 1,851meters. Before February 1,1960, Pithoragarh was tagged as a district of Almora but in the same year it became a separate district. The Headquarter of district Pithoragarh is the city Pithoragarh itself. The Head offices of all Govt. departments are situated in the city.
Pithoragarh is rich in natural beauty and it offers best view of the Himalaya. The peaks that fall in this district are Nanda Devi (east), Nanda Devi (west), Trishul, Nandakhat, Rajrambha, Panchchuli group and many others. Some of the Glaciers that fall in this district are Milam Glacier, Sunder Dhunga Glacier, Ralam Glacier, Namik Glacier.
Throughout the year the temperature here remains cool. This easternmost hill district of the Uttaranchal Pradesh is often referred as 'Miniature Kashmir'.
