Champawat, situated at an elevation of 1,615 m above sea level, is barely 76 km from Pithoragarh. Earlier it was the capital of Chand Rajas of Kumaon but later it became the district headquarters. The most prominent historical attractions are temples of Champadri, Baleshwar, Durga, Ratneshwar. Here also lies a small fort.
