The area which is covered under the Tehri Garhwal district stretches from the snow clad Himalayan peaks of Thalaiya sagar, Jonli and the Gangotri group all the way to the foothills near Rishikesh. It seems as if all the rivers gratitude born to provide a boundary to this district only. River Bhagirathi which gushes through the district divides it into whereas the Bhilangna, Alaknanda, Ganga and Yamuna rivers border it on the east and west.
Its neighbouring district are Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pauri, Rudraprayag and Dehradun. One another true fact is that in the past, the king of Garhwal has honored the British for
casting off Garhwal from the Gorkhas. He had expressed his thanks by giving away half of his kingdom. As a result, Pauri garhwal, along with today's Chamoli and Rudraprayag (partly) district is labeled as British Garhwal until India's independence in 1947.
At the confluence of the rivers Bhagirathi and Bhilangna, Tehri became the new Capital of Tehri Garhwal. The old capital pf Tehri Garhwal was Srinagar.
