Haridwar literally means 'The gateway to the Gods'. It is located at the foot of the Shivalik hills. From the grand Himalayas above, the River Ganga flows down and meet the plains. Since it provides a doorway to the four pilgrimage of Uttarakhand, so it is also known as Gangadwar, Tapovan and Mayapuri. In its ancient time, the name “Haridwar” was a kind of gift from the rishis. The five sacred bathing spots in Haridwar are Gangadwara, Kankhal, Nila Parvata, Bilwa Theertha and Kusavarta. The main ghat at Haridwar is known as Hari-ki-Pairi.
